Who is Annika Hansteen-Izora?

“What’s good?

I’m Annika (she/they/he). I’m an artist, writer, and designer based in Brooklyn, NY on unceded Lenape land. I explore the intersections of design, radical Black imagination, art and technology to create ecosystems rooted in dreaming and care.

As of late, I’ve been exploring the topics of communal dreaming, digital gardens, creative ecosystems, queering friendship, communal care, design as speculative world building, reimagining social media, Black queer archives, and tenderness as a praxis.

I’m Head of Design across product and brand at Somewhere Good, an audio platform for intimate community conversations that launched April 2022. I’m also the author of Tenderness: An Honoring of my Queer Black Joy and Rage, Co-Head of Black Feast, a culinary event that celebrates Black artists and writers through food, and Co-Creator of Friendship Experiments, a to be released book and video series exploring QTPOC friendship.

I’ve been featured by The Creative Independent, It’s Nice That, AIGA Eye on Design, Well+Good, Vogue, McNay Art Museum, New Public, Bustle, and others. I’ve had the pleasure of hosting speaking engagements at Princeton, Carnegie Mellon University, Leeds Arts University, Creative Mornings, New Public, Afrotechtopia, the Fashion Institute for Technology, Brooklyn Museum, and other spaces.

I create across various realms of design, including: brand, product, UI, experiential, editorial, digital and advertising. My past clients include Samsung, MTV, Intel, HP, Jaguar Land Rover, alongside artists across the country such as Jamila Woods and Curtis Roach.

As a poet, my writing centers on healing, liberation, queerness, Blackness, and joy. As a human, you can find me making playlists, eating vegan dumplings, and musing over the best Tribe Called Quest album (currently – I stand by Midnight Marauders).” (source)
